About the treatment

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is different from booking a general massage. A physiotherapist first builds a picture of the problem through questions and movement or strength checks. Treatment may include hands-on techniques, advice and exercises intended to help you manage symptoms and improve function over time.

Who it may suit

  • A new musculoskeletal problem that needs assessment
  • Recovery after an injury or period of reduced movement
  • Recurring pain that affects day-to-day activity
  • Guidance on strength, mobility or returning to activity

What happens in a session

  • A detailed first consultation covering symptoms and medical history
  • Relevant movement, mobility or strength assessment
  • A clear explanation of findings and agreed goals
  • Hands-on treatment, exercises or self-management advice where appropriate

Choosing your appointment length

Physiotherapy has a 60-minute first consultation and treatment. Ongoing appointments are available in 30 or 60 minutes, depending on how much reassessment, treatment and exercise progression is needed.

60 min First consultation and treatment

Time for the physiotherapist to take a history, assess relevant movement or strength, explain their findings and begin suitable treatment.

30 min Ongoing physiotherapy

A shorter follow-up focused on reviewing progress and continuing the agreed treatment or exercise plan.

60 min Ongoing physiotherapy

A longer follow-up with more time to reassess, continue treatment and progress exercises or practical guidance.

The first consultation and treatment is 60 minutes. Ongoing physiotherapy can be booked for 30 or 60 minutes. Availability is confirmed as you book.

Your comfort comes first

Every session should be adapted to you. Share relevant health information, say what you want from the appointment and speak up about pressure or positioning at any point.

Please note: Urgent or severe symptoms may require medical care rather than a routine physiotherapy appointment. Follow emergency or NHS guidance when appropriate.

Physiotherapy questions

What happens at a first physiotherapy appointment?

The physiotherapist asks about your symptoms and medical history, assesses relevant movement or strength, explains their findings and agrees a treatment plan with you.

What should I wear?

Choose comfortable clothing that allows the relevant area to move and be examined. The provider can advise if you are unsure.

How many appointments will I need?

That depends on the problem, your goals and how you respond. The physiotherapist should review progress and explain whether further sessions are likely to help.

How is physiotherapy different from massage?

Physiotherapy is a clinical, assessment-led service that may combine hands-on treatment with exercise and self-management advice. Massage is primarily a hands-on treatment.

How long is a physiotherapy appointment?

The first physiotherapy consultation and treatment is 60 minutes. Ongoing physiotherapy appointments are available for 30 or 60 minutes. A longer follow-up provides more time for the same physiotherapy assessment, treatment and exercise plan; it does not add another service.
