About the treatment

What is osteopathy?

An osteopathy appointment begins with a health history and physical assessment. The osteopath may look beyond the exact site of discomfort to understand how other joints, muscles and habits affect the way you move. An agreed plan can then combine manual techniques with practical advice.

Who it may suit

  • Muscle or joint discomfort affecting movement
  • Back, neck or shoulder stiffness
  • A recurring issue that benefits from a broader movement assessment
  • People who want hands-on care plus self-management advice

What happens in a session

  • Questions about symptoms, health history and daily activity
  • Movement and physical assessment relevant to the concern
  • Techniques that may include soft-tissue work, mobilisation or stretching
  • Advice or exercises to support the treatment plan

Choosing your appointment length

Osteopathy has a 60-minute first consultation and treatment. Ongoing appointments are available in 30 or 60 minutes, depending on how much reassessment, hands-on care and advice is needed.

60 min First consultation and treatment

Time for the osteopath to take a health history, assess relevant movement, discuss suitable care and begin agreed treatment.

30 min Ongoing osteopathy

A shorter follow-up focused on reviewing progress and continuing care around the main priority area.

60 min Ongoing osteopathy

A longer follow-up with more time to reassess movement, continue hands-on treatment and discuss practical advice.

The first consultation and treatment is 60 minutes. Ongoing osteopathy can be booked for 30 or 60 minutes. Availability is confirmed as you book.

Your comfort comes first

Every session should be adapted to you. Share relevant health information, say what you want from the appointment and speak up about pressure or positioning at any point.

Please note: Osteopathy does not replace urgent or specialist medical care. Seek appropriate medical advice for severe, sudden or unexplained symptoms.

Osteopathy questions

What happens at a first osteopathy appointment?

The osteopath takes a health history, asks about your symptoms, assesses relevant movement and discusses suitable treatment options before proceeding.

How is osteopathy different from physiotherapy?

Both assess movement and may use hands-on treatment and exercises. Their training and clinical approach differ, so the best choice depends on your needs and the individual practitioner.

Will my joints be manipulated?

Not necessarily. Osteopaths can use soft-tissue work, mobilisation, stretching and other techniques. They should explain any proposed technique and obtain your consent.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move. The osteopath may need to observe or examine the relevant area and should explain this respectfully.

How long is an osteopathy appointment?

The first osteopathy consultation and treatment is 60 minutes. Ongoing osteopathy appointments are available for 30 or 60 minutes. A longer follow-up provides more time for the same osteopathic reassessment, hands-on care and advice; it does not add another service.
